Message from Rojava – 20.02.2026

Listen here to the daily update:

Dear friends, sisters and comrades,

Today is the 20th February and here is our daiy update from Rojava, from the heart of the women’s revolution, where life is being defended.

The unrest is very present here. While Kobane remains under siege, the negotiations continue.

It is very clear that even if this war no longer takes place primarily on the battlefield, but now at the negotiating table, it is by no means over.

What is being developed at this negotiating table right now is a new form of politics. We can see this in the context of Abdullah Ocalan’s call of February 27 last year, a call for peace and a democratic society, which was followed by the dissolution of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its disarmament. This party was founded with the aim of a national liberation movement, a Kurdish socialist state. Long processes of reflection resulted in the realization that a state is always a tool of exclusion and oppression and therefore cannot lead to freedom.

The aim of the Rojava Revolution was never to have its own state, but rather to reject state structures.

The Rojava Revolution embodies the emergence of a democratic nation in which all ethnicities, religions and cultures build a common life. Their principle is the self-defense of these structures and the rejection of any violence, such as armed struggle.

In recent weeks, we have seen that war is not just military battles, but the democratic nation has also been attacked on a mental level by racist incitement. The Kurdish and Arab populations of northern and eastern Syria are under intense divisive attacks. These attacks, this special warfare, is taking place primarily in the media.

I would like to read to you the words from the last days of the head of the al-Tayy Council of Arab Tribes, Sheikh Hassan Farhan al-Tayy:

“In recent times, we have observed a noticeable rise in hate speech and attempt to ignite strife. What we need today is a clear Kurdish and Arab message indeed, a message from all components standing against these inflammatory discourses.

“We do not accept any party a provocative discourse aimed at fragmenting the relationships between Kurds, Arabs and Christians living together and both the Kurdish and Arab communities have always stood as equal distance in terms of harmony and integration, whether in the past or in the present and this will remain the case for the future. “

“The tribal and clan-based structure is a deeply rooted social reality that has endured despite changing authorities and circumstances. What we wish to convey to all those who attempt incitement is that no discourse should rise above the discourse of loyalty to our shared history and the love that unites Syria. The message we affirm are genuine messages: Syrias mosaic cannot be torn apart by any party, nor can its components be divided.”

Another moment of the Democratic Nation these days is a meeting of the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) with a delegation from Suweida. The majority Druze population of this southern part of Syria, like the Kurdish population of the northern part, has been subjected to severe attacks and massacres by the forces of the Syrian Transitional Government for months. These massacres peaked in the summer of 2025, but are also increasing these days. Just yesterday a car exploded and the driver died.

After yesterdays meeting in Haseke MSD Co-Chair Leyla Qereman underlined the importance of advancing the transitional process in Syria and stressed the need to build a political system based on decentralization, pluralism, and democracy.

Another news is the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. While the protests continue in Iran, imperial forces are preparing for war in Iran and also the withdrawel of troops from Syria can be seen in this preparations.

These developments, from unrest in Iraq that cannot be separated from the situation in Iran, are of particular concern to the Yazidi community in Shengal:

The Jineoloji Academy of Shengal has published a report saying: “The genocide and feminicide of the terrorist organization ‘Islamic State’ (IS) that began in 2014 has not only brought about great suffering but also a strong will to resist and self-organize. The Yazidis are no longer the same as before – they will defend themselves” –

The report will also be available in English on the jineoloji website in a few days.

The days are slowly getting warmer in Rojava.

Spring is heralded by individual sunny days.

With spring the New Year’s festival Newroz approaches.

The Kurdish Community Congress (KCDK and TJK) writes:

“These years “the Newroz Fire” should be turned “into the light of:

Women’s freedom,

The equal and free unity of people,

ecological life,

And the democratic nation.

Through democratic, peaceful, and egalitarian joint struggle, we can protect both our national existence and our social values.”

We send the spring, as a sign of the resistance of life, to you in your regions

With resistant greetings from Rojava
