More than 12 years ago, the Kurdish people in northern Syria set out to implement a democratic model of society with the so-called Rojava Revolution. Over the years, they built up a democratic council system based on the ideas of democratic confederalism. In this system, society now organizes itself at all levels. The people of the region created a common force from their diversity of the most varied social, cultural and religious groups and together founded today’s Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. Since the beginning, women have played a pioneering role in the reconstruction of society. The liberation of women was placed at the center of the struggle for a free life, a free society and peaceful coexistence. Women established an autonomous women’s system as part of the self-administration and the Rojava revolution became known as the women’s revolution.
The exhibition “Jin Jiyan Azadî – the achievements of the women’s revolution” was developed jointly by Kongra Star (North and East Syria), the European Committee of the Free Women’s Foundation of Syria (WJAS) and Women Defend Rojava. With its expressive images and texts, it takes a look at the various areas of life in which the women of the region have built up their self-governing structures. Focusing on 13 themes, a total of 26 fabric banners tell the story of women’s lives and works through short, concise texts and large-format photos.
